Another well-writtten, highly interesting post Texas is my birthplace and childhood home. I have a wealth of memories —both good and bad about Texas— but Barbara Jordan is an exceptionally good thought in these times. Her speaking skills give Kamala Harris a run — too bad she was just a tad ahead of her time but perhaps more accurately, I should say all of us were more than a tad behind her. In memory.
Well, I do believe that language is a tool. It’s definitely guided by the audience. One can’t speak over them or under them. I do appreciate using a higher tone and choice of words is part of that.Frankly. And I know this sounds somewhat stuffy, but I don’t run into any people who can have that conversation. (By the way, I know the difference is between a complete sentence and a fragment. Autocorrect keeps changing what I type.
Thanks again for your kind words. I remember when Barbara Jordan delivered that speech. It was riveting. What a classy lady. I don’t know if that type exists anymore.
Yes, language is a tool, and you’re correct, can’t speak above or below. I found that lesson the hard way: just as I was transitioning from Berkeley to my first corporate job, I was ‘given to understand’ that my words were above the normal vocabulary of my co-workers. So, I adjusted — needed the money this job would bring. As a Texas-style sign off, I’ll just say DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS. Jesus….
A, don’t know if that type exists anymore? Well, probably not. I think not because the ‘times’ don’t countenance that type of intelligence and forthright speaking skills that don’t rely on bombast and foul language to get congressional attention. Let’s hope we will see her like again — in the very near future. Couldn’t be soon enough….
